The Vegan Diet – How to Stop Eating Dairy
It seems that stop eating dairy is one of the biggest challenges many people face when they start a vegan diet. Let’s face it, there are so many products out there that contain dairy and even in some products, the dairy is “hidden” from us by some by-products taken out from a dairy product.
I also struggled with this issue for a long time, and for me it was more of a will power issue than anything else. For periods of time, I would commit myself to stop eating any dairy products and I would get the habit of reading labels to see that the product I was buying was 100 % vegan.
But there were times in which my cravings for dairy products were very hard to handle. During these times I would say to myself that a little piece of cheese won’t hurt, or an ice cream cone won’t matter. Later I would find myself off track and with a big sense of guilt, and trying to commit myself to the vegan lifestyle once more. Repeating the cycle all over again.
So how can we stop that vicious circle of going on and off the vegan diet?
It really comes down to retraining our desires and feelings to what makes us feel good. We might find comfort for a while in eating that ice cream cone, some cheese, or a piece of cake, but when you went
vegan, you did it for a greater cause and I hope you felt good once you made that choice. It is no longer about what made you feel good in the past, but what makes you feel good now or in the long term. And to me, when I used to go back and forth between eating dairy, I noticed that I felt better not only physically but also emotionally when I went back to a vegan diet. That good emotion I felt every time I went back to a vegan diet grew stronger and stronger, helping me fight those cravings.
So now that you know what makes you feel good, you can consciously choose between that ice cream cone or that fruit. Once you make that conscious decision of choosing the fruit over the ice cream, you are breaking the cycle that pulls you out of your vegan. This in return will also make enormous improvements over your self discipline as it will give you more power to choose the things that makes you feel go.
